Koh Tao Thailand

A Remote Paradise in Koh Tao, Thailand

Thailand is a gorgeous country with a seemingly infinite number of spots perfect for drone photography.  If you can only pick one, I highly recommend Koh Tao.  Koh Tao is an isolated island located at the southern part of Thailand in the Gulf of Thailand about 1:30 hours ferry ride from Chumphon ferry terminal. The meaning of “Koh” in Thai mean island where “Tao” means Turtle. You can probably already guess that the shape of the island looks just like turtle that how they came up with the name. The best time to visit Koh Tao to avoid the monsoon season is December through May which is the opposite side from the Andaman sea. Prepare to witness the most beautiful sunset you will ever see.

Activities & Things to See

I’ll admit, aside from the aerial photography, my main goal for this trip was to get my scuba license. Koh Tao has one of the least expensive spots to get a license, so if you are up for some underwater adventure, I would totally recommend it. The good spot to fly your drone and to stay will be on the west side of the island. There’s more beach area than the east side and is also closer to the pier as well. Another location that is also beautiful to visit is called Koh Nang Yuan. It’s only a 15 minute boat ride from Koh Tao depending where you depart from. Koh Nang Yuan is a private island and they don’t allow overnight stay. It’s also a very beautiful sight to fly your drone. Another island that you can visit is Koh Phangan, if you heard of the full moon party that will be where it is located.

Flying drone in Koh Tao was definitely easy. I went to Koh Tao in May and didn’t experience any difficulty at all. There was no rain and the wind was very calm. You can easily paddle board along the west beach for miles. I only wish that drone can fly in water because the highlight of Koh Tao is underwater. Since the Thai government has prohibited fishery near the island, marine lives has returned to the island and the most important of all, the whale shark. Currently, there are a report of 3 whale sharks near the island.

The nightlife in Koh Tao is also a significant part that draws tourists to this beautiful island. Again, the main strip is located on the west coast where it’s more lively day and night. If you seek some private and low key time, i’d suggest the east side of the island. There are also a few easy hike spots throughout the island too. Because the island isn’t too big, staying on the island for 5 days is pretty sufficient.
